Counselor Educators and Supervisors,

Welcome to the CACES Web site.  Let me introduce myself; I am your president for 2007-2009.  I work at the University of La Verne as a counselor educator and school psychology educator and am currently the chair of the School Psychology Program.  After two successful years with Dr. Margaret Cooney, I am proud to follow in her footsteps and go forward with CACES leadership.  I am pleased to say that I have a wonderful board this year with Dr. Margaret Cooney (San Bernardino State University) as Past President, Dr. Tom Batsis (Loyola Marymount University) as President-Elect, and Thierry Kolpin (Regional Center Administration- University of La Verne) as Secretary-Treasurer.

This is a very exciting year for counseling in California.  With the change of the CACD name to the California Counseling Association (CCA), the landmark passage of AB 1802 School Counseling bill for $200 million, and the active thrust for professional counselor licensure, counseling is news!  It is anticipated that 2008 will continue to be a banner year for counseling in California.  In order to make that happen, counselor educators need to pull together and support the ongoing efforts of the California Coalition for Counselor Licensure, continue the rebuilding of CCA, and become members of a professional counseling association.

In order to strengthen CACES, my mantra for the next two years is to make all of us VIPs.

How will that happen, with  .........VISION...............INVOLVEMENT..............PASSION AND PERSISTENCE

Our VISION is professional counselor licensure for the state of California.

Our INVOLVEMENT is increased membership of counselor educators across the state is professional counseling associations.  You can join CACES by going back to the home page of the CCA Web site and select membership to join on line.

PASSION for life is purple, a love affair, a wonderful sunset, a walk in the park with your child or grandchild, a hug for a friend in need, a special encouragement for a student, or a kind word to a disagreeable person.  In our profession we instill the passion of counseling in our students; let’s not loose that passion for the future of counseling.

And finally PERSISTENCE, we must persist to attain our goals, enable our dreams, and fulfill our commitments.  Join with me to build CACES, improve the counseling profession, provide research for the effectiveness of  AB 1802 school counseling, and bring a Counselor Education Doctoral Program back to California.

Communication skills are the leadership skills of the 21st century.  David Burgess

Let me hear from you.  I would welcome Counselor Education articles on outstanding features of your counselor education program for the newsletter, volunteers to hold regional meetings, and your concerns about counselor education and supervision, credentialing, and licensure.
